Upper Right Back Pain

This is the pain that occurs in the upper right region of the back, the area above the lower back and below the neck on the right side of the body. This is the area where the ribs are attached to the spinal column on the body. The upper right quadrant pain in the back is generally localized and specific to that area.

Causes and Symptoms:

There could be several causes for upper right back pain. Usually it occurs due to damage to the bones along the spinal column or the muscles or ligaments that are attached to the vertebrae. The causes for these conditions could be trauma, over exerted muscles, a compressed nerve, which could be due to a herniated disc or a bulging disc or fractured vertebrae. However, one of the most common causes of upper right back pain could be due to lack of exercise, which causes several muscle and joint problems. In certain cases, women also experience upper right back pain during pregnancy.

Upper right back pain is very common in people in the age group of 40 to 50 years or more. Patients usually experience pain when they take a deep breath. The pain also gets worse when getting in and out of bed.

This pain is also sometimes caused due to a fracture in a vertebra and if this happens in a woman over 50 years of age, the culprit could be osteoporosis. Fracture could also occur due to an accident or injury. In such situations, a patient experiences pain while moving or even when the upper right part of their body is touched.

Treatments:

There are several treatments available for upper right back pain depending on the causes. Physicians usually advice ice pack treatments ,over the counter medications, and some exercises to help provide relief from the pain.

Patients are also advised against taking up activities that put pressure on the affected area. In severe cases, protective braces are also prescribed. Losing excess body weight and maintaining a good posture also helps provide relief from such pain.
